Full-Length Manuscript Submissions (Open Year-Round) Word Count: 60,000–120,000 words
History Through Fiction, along with our imprints HTF Publishing, HTF Romance, and HTF Fantasy, is dedicated to publishing high-quality fiction grounded in historical research. We are especially interested in stories about real people and historical events, with fictionalized elements that bring the past vividly to life.
We welcome novels that incorporate nonfiction-style elements—such as footnotes, endnotes, or a bibliography—though these are not required. These features can add transparency and invite readers to explore the history behind the story. Above all, submissions should balance historical rigor with strong narrative drive.
📄 What to Submit
Please submit one complete submission containing the following:
- A query letter that includes your manuscript’s word count
- A synopsis of 500 words or fewer
- The first 10–15 pages of your manuscript
You will upload these materials directly through Submittable.
📚 Review Process
We first review submissions to determine whether they align with our publishing vision and audience. If your submission captures our interest, we will request the full manuscript for further evaluation.
Full manuscripts are assessed for craft, content, historical engagement, and overall quality. If we believe your novel is an excellent fit, we may offer either a traditional or hybrid publishing contract.
- Traditional Publishing Contracts are offered to a small number of manuscripts that are an exceptional fit for our specialized market and include a modest advance with no financial investment from the author.
- Hybrid Publishing Contracts are offered when we love a manuscript’s potential and believe collaborative development will help it reach its fullest expression. These contracts require a financial investment from the author.

- We accept multiple submissions and unsolicited manuscripts
- Submissions are welcome from both debut and experienced authors
- Writers from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other historically underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to submit
- Please allow up to three months for a response; polite follow-ups are welcome after that time
- Submissions created using Generative AI at any stage of the writing process will not be considered
